Artist's Comments

This is a species of night blooming cactus native to where I live in the Sonoran Desert. Its only pollinators are nocturnal hummingbird moths. The moths are quite large, and they look similar to hummingbirds. The flowers are very large as well, the size of a small plate.

Scientific Name: Harrisia jusbertii or Cereus jusbertii
Common Name: "Queen of the Night" or "Night Blooming Cereus"

It's interesting how they open up completely at night, and close up during the day.

Nice picture :)

Thanks! Yeah that cactus is amazing, and it blooms all at once too, one time we counted 50 blooms! Do you know the name of it by chance?

this is great  the cream turning to yellow turning to blue and fading into the black :) it's very pretty. you had a good flash!

Thanks! <3 I actually made the colors more intense using painter, though, lol.

still looks natural though :)

I think they're just called the "Saguaro Cactus Blossom". It's actually the Arizona state flower haha, which I didn't know (and I live in AZ :p) Here's a link on it: [link] They're pretty cool! The blossoms become pollinated and later become fruit, which we actually eat haha.

This actually isn't a Saguaro cactus blossom. Saguaros bloom during the day, this particular cactus blooms only at night. I live in Tucson, AZ so I know ALL about the Saguaro. The cactus that blooms at night is much smaller than a Saguaro and it looks similar to an organ pipe cactus.

Oh I actually looked it up and I found out it's called: Harrisia jusbertii or more commonly called "The Queen of the Night" or "Night Blooming Cereus".

Oooh, I think I was reading about the saguaro and got the blooming times mixed up then! Haha yep.. we arizonans see cactus everywhere.

"The Queen of the Night" definitely sounds more romantic. Haha
